HUBERT SUMLIN by Nelson Onofre

Greetings blues fans! How's 2010 treating you so far? This week I am submitting photos from the Howlin' for Hubert show at BB King's back in Nov. 2009. Hubert being Hubert Sumlin. Check out J. Blake's review of that show here. I enjoyed the show because it gave me the chance to see this living legend. Having said that I pretty much agree with Blake's review of the show. The turnout for the show was quite good. Guitarists that have raved about Hubert include Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. Nice to see that Hubert is still out there and continuing to spread the blues message. And yes, he sure looks like a blues man!

Coco Montoya by Nelson Onofre

Greetings blues fans and Happy New Year! Hopefully you all had a safe and pleasant entry into 2010. New York was its usual festive and raucous self. It never ceases to amaze me how people brave the cold weather and sheer number of other people just to welcome in the new year in Times Square, which is where the ball drops. It's actually quite a sight.

This week I am featuring photos of Coco Montoya from two shows this past November. One show was at a club called Mexicali Live in New Jersey and another show was at the BB King Blues Club. Tommy Castro and his band were on the bill for both. Coco opened the Mexicali show and Tommy opened the BB's show. Tommy came out and jammed with Coco near the end of Coco's set. I will have photos of Tommy at a later date.

This makes maybe the fifth time I've seen Coco and he never disappoints. He still has Randy Hayes on drums but on keys this time around is Brant Leeper and Nate Brown is holding it down on bass. Needless to say Coco and the band were firing on all cylinders.
Coco mentioned he has a new CD in the works. He also said it was going to be a little different and to keep an open mind. So...keep an open mind! Hey, it'll still be Coco and that's all that matters.

Here's hoping 2010 is a big year for blues music and that it continues to attract new fans.

Duke Robillard by Nelson Onofre

Greetings and Happy Holidays blues fans! I hope Santa dropped off everything or almost everything on your Christmas list. I'm sure there were more than a few shiny new electric guitars left under Christmas trees. Any aspiring blues men or women out there?

This week I am submitting photos of Duke Robillard from his Oct. 28, 2009 show at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York. Duke has been on the scene for 30 plus years and is one of the most well respected guitarists in the blues community. He is the second most honored guitarist for The Blues Music Awards, having won 4 out of 5 years. Check out his website and see if he'll be performing at a club near you sometime soon.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd by Nelson Onofre

Greetings and Happy Holidays blues fans! It appears New York is on the verge of being hit by a big snowstorm. I guess by the time this post goes up we will be covered in snow. If that's the case and if it's not too cold maybe I can go outside and get some nice winter photos. Been a while since I've done that.

This week I am featuring photos of Kenny Wayne Shepherd from his Nov. 18, 2009 show at BB King's. I have a couple of Kenny's discs so I was familiar with his sound and abilities but I have to say I was presently surprised at how great he sounded live. Kenny has matured and blossomed into a fiery electric blues player. And what a nice surprise to see none other than Chris 'Whipper' Layton, formerly of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble, on drums. The band was rounded out by Noah Hunt on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Rev. Riley Osbourn on keys and Scott Nelson on bass.

Kenny and the band put on a solid show for the near capacity crowd at BB's. I'm a big fan of high-powered electric blues and that's what KWS delivered. I understand a live CD is in the works and I am definitely putting that on my list of things to get.
